Adventures

Kids are natural collectors. Our parent and child trips are educational, with lots of collecting opportunities. We supply all tools. All ages are welcome; no more than two kids per parent. Led by our staff of educator/naturalists.

Glowing Minerals

Some minerals glow in the dark when illuminated with an ultraviolet light. On this evening trip you will learn the fascinating story of fluorescence, then collect fluorescent minerals after dark. We provide shortwave ultraviolet lights. You provide a small flashlight for the short hike to the locality.

Price:
$30 per person

  • Minimum age: 8 years
  • Trip lasts 1 1/2 to 2 hours
  • We use Superbright (tm) lights, which require an adult to carry the battery pack, while their child carries the light. For adults bringing more than 1 child, the kids will work together with one light.

Palm Trees in Seattle / a.k.a. Amber collecting

Collect remnants of our tropical past on Tiger Mountain, near Issaquah. We will find amber specimens in 3 colors: yellow, orange, and blue, and occasional tropical plant fossils. WeŽll examine the geologic forces which shaped our region, and investigate historic coal-mining ruins. Access requires a two mile hike, round trip, with little elevation change. Amber is a rare and treasured substance. Issaquah is one of only five places in the U.S where it can be easily found.  Join us for a real geologic treasure hunt!  Trip is on land leased by us, you cannot return without a Geology Adventures guide.

Price:
$28 per person

  • Minimum age: 7 years
  • Trip lasts 3 to 4 hours
  • Not usually scheduled during summer, as digging can be difficult here during hot, dry periods.

2008 Dates:
April 26, May 24, Sept. 28, Oct. 18, 2008  Additional dates offered by the Redmond, WA Parks & Recreation programs, at www.redmond.gov
