You love crystals. You've dug handsful of small points, maybe been to Spruce, where you filled your backpack with finger-sized crystals. But your fantasy is finding crystals as big as your fist. Maybe
bigger. Maybe amethyst.
Join us on our annual trek to Hallelujah Junction, California. We move a small mountain of weathered granite to find large amethyst crystals, smoky quartz,
and scepters which combine the two. We have a backhoe to do the hard work; your "job" is to hammer and chisel open the abundant quartz seams in search of vugs.
Even if you've never opened a vug before, the rock gods will smile on you at Hallelujah.
You'll find abundant smoky quartz crystals, average size 3 to 6 inches. Large ones get up to 18 inches long, with a beautiful dark smoky color clear enough to facet. Amethyst is less
abundant, but almost everyone finds some. Largest amethyst crystal found on our trips so far was 12 lbs.! Two pounders are common. And the fabulous sceptered quartz has made this locality world famous.
The logistics: the locality is on a mountain which straddles the California-Nevada state line. We camp in CA, dig in NV. You can stay in Reno, NV (45 minutes away) if you
prefer. If you bring a 4X4, you can drive right up to the locality. Otherwise, itŽs a 20 minute steep hike from camp. Camping is on a juniper-covered knoll, in a
spectacular mountain setting. We can accomodate tents and vans; motorhomes and trailers usually cannot handle the steep access road.
Due to the high value of pieces found here, there are some restrictions on what you can keep.
DATES: to be announced, likely October, 2003.
